UHH OHH...I CAN'T GET SICK

See what had happened was…

My youngest son Jeremiah was playing with a neighbor after school. The mother warned me that he had a mild cough, but I wasn’t concerned. They only played for 30 minutes. But later that night he was lying in the bed and said, “Mommy I’m hot.” I touched him and he was scorching hot. I took his temperature and he was at 104 degrees!  YIKES!

For all my Mommies & Daddies – you know this is when that superhero parent gene kicks in!

I immediately grabbed a cold cloth, gave him Tylenol, and changed him into new fresh shorts and a tee. Then I pumped him up with orange juice for Vitamin C, water to keep him hydrated, and medicine around the clock.

Who remembers this episode where even Martin got sick and wanted his Momma to take care of him lol.

Flu season is upon us, and it’s hard as heck keeping it outside of your family, especially when you have kids. When they get sick, that is when our stripes as Super Moms and Dads are most valuable. But we must stay invincible to care for them, which means while treating them WE CAN’T GET SICK EITHER.

So, here’s my regimen for not catching a cold and keeping the rest of the family from getting sick, when you’re treating one of your kids who is.

#1: UP THE VITAMIN C

Upping my Vitamin C is something I do for myself when a child is sick, and especially when I feel a sniffle coming on. Ironically I stay away from orange juice to avoid extra calories. Did you know a cup of orange juice is equivalent 6-8 oranges? That’s a whole lot of calories.

In general, to keep my immune system on point, I take a Vitamin C pill or Emergen-C daily, and & Airborne if I’m traveling. I’ll go heavy especially when the seasons change and flu season hits.

#2: SANITIZE THE ENTIRE HOUSE

And I mean EVERYTHING! The doorknobs, toys, games, TV remote - and anywhere else that’s a common area or something anyone can frequently touch. My mindset is “Please believe we’re gonna kill these germs today!”

  #3: NO SHARING

The Hoods are known for grabbing a little something something off another’s plate in the family – especially the kids. No drink is safe. But when someone is sick – this ends asap. No stealing a swig from anybody else’s cup, no taking any bites from anyone else’s plate, or God forbid taking a swig from the fridge.

 #4: DOUBLE WASH THE DISHES

EVERY dish gets washed twice in boiling hot water. I first put the dishes in the dishwasher under heat setting, & then wash them again by hand.

 #5: KID SEPARATION

It’s hard, but I try to keep the kids separated while one is sick. I even keep the dog away too lol.

But this is very important in my household because we have a child with special needs, and he can’t get sick. It will lower his immune threshold to fight of sickness and infection, and he could have a seizure due to a fever.

Us Special Needs Moms know this all too well and are always on guard, keeping our babies away from anyone in the house who catches a cold. Staying on top of this makes me mildly OCD.

So to all my Super Mommies & Daddies - stay loaded up with Vitamin C and try out these other tips too. Remember, you’re the rock of your household and have to stay as healthy as possible. Repeat after me…
